Eve - Did you sneak a peek?

Genesis 3:7-8 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

It's Christmas time and many of us have wrapped our presents or at least hidden them somewhere away from prying eyes - but as we all know, that doesn't always work. How many of us, growing up, have sneaked into the Christmas presents and unwrapped to take a peek? And in so doing, the guilt outweighed any joy of the actual gift.

Verse 8 makes it pretty clear of the type of relationship that God had with Adam and Eve. In the evening He came walking in the garden wanting to spend time with them. God had a relationship with Adam and Eve. He didn't just create them and leave them there - He spent time with them and they enjoyed His company. But now, just as when we open the present we know we're not supposed to open - they don't want to face their Father.

It is not unreasonable to think that at some point, God would've shared with them about that tree. That eventually, sooner or later, God would've let them eat some of that fruit. Maybe He was going to tell them about their nakedness later and present them with a nice white robe instead of those itchy fig leaves. Whatever it was that God had planned for them, was ruined because of their own selfish desires.

How many times have we ruined a great surprise for this same reason. Two thousand and eight years ago God sent us a gift - a fulfillment of a promise that would save us from this sin we can't seem to keep away from. Even in spite of ourselves - God is still desiring a relationship with us, to walk with us, and talk with us and I think there still might be a white robe, or maybe even a crown, waiting for us under His tree.
